Edacity

2017-2020

“Edacity” is a response to the effects of technology on food consumption and production. This immersive installation is a multi-sensory, interactive piece, leaving the viewer submerged into another world of eerie wonder in as much as ominously foreboding.

Entering the darkened space, one is confronted with rows of glowing metal and glass corn stalks “growing” in a field. Overhead, a kinetic Damocles Sword-like seedling dangles from a fine thread, rotating a small, random beacon of light around the room. A central runway of metal and glass corn stalks draws the viewer down its path, converging on a horizon. As one advances down the “field”, this horizon reveals itself to be a dead end - it is nothing more than a mirrored illusion reflecting back on the viewer as he faces himself in the mirror. The immersive “house of mirrors” creates a disorienting illusion of space while the walls come alive with trailing video derivatives recalling the interior of the body.

The final interactive installation is titled “Breathe.” This image of the “Edacity” series details the bejewelled lights on the corn stalks creating a guiding constellation. Above, the surrounding walls of the installation appear to breathe organically as one appears to travel somewhere within the microcosm of the body close to the spinal processes.

Metal, stained glass, glass, Mylar, mirror, filament, plastic, video derivatives and lighting.
